เจ้าอยู่หัว

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Thai

[edit]
13th-century Cambodian sculpture of Avalokiteśvara with a buddha figure on the head

Etymology

[edit]

Clipping of พระพุทธเจ้าอยู่หัว (prá-pút-tá-jâao-yùu-hǔua, literally “Lord Buddha on head(s)”).[1][2] By surface analysis, เจ้า (jâao, “lord”) +‎ อยู่ (yùu, “to be (on)”) +‎ หัว (hǔua, “head”), literally “lord on head(s)”.

Suggested to mean (1) "one with Lord (Buddha) on his head", based on the old belief that a buddha-to-be has a Buddha figure on his head;[1] or (2) "one who is Lord (Buddha) on our heads", based on the old belief that treats kings as buddhas.[3][4]
