Etymology

[edit]

Compound of พระพุทธเจ้า (prá-pút-tá-jâao, “Lord Buddha”) +‎ อยู่ (yùu, “to be (on)”) +‎ หัว (hǔua, “head”), literally “Lord Buddha on head(s)”.

Suggested to mean (1) "one with Lord Buddha on his head", based on the old belief that a buddha-to-be has a Buddha figure on his head;[1] or (2) "one who is Lord Buddha on our heads", based on the old belief that treats kings as buddhas.[2][3]
