US politician who was ousted over sexual misconduct allegations

Matthew Louis Gaetz II is a US lawyer and Republican politician who was a U.S. representative from 2017 until 2024.

Political positions

He was an ally of Donald Trump.[1]

He issued a letter to the FBI demanding answers about their involvement in the 2021 Washington D.C. Riots.[2]

He criticised George Soros for his funding of Open borders.[3]

He has invited Britney Spears to testify at Congress.[4]

Questioned the ON about 9/11, and supports withdrawing American troops from Afghanistan.[5]

Sexual misconduct charges

In late 2020, the Department of Justice opened an investigation into allegations that Gaetz had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl in exchange for money in violation of federal sex trafficking laws, which Gaetz denied.[6][7][8]

In April 2021, the House Ethics Committee also announced an investigation.[9] In September 2022, career prosecutors recommended not to charge Gaetz in the sex-trafficking investigation, telling Justice Department superiors that a conviction is unlikely in part because of credibility questions about the two central witnesses.[10], leaving open the question of whether the whole investigation might have been a politically motivated operation.

At one point he was approached by a former Justice Department official and extorted to make the sexual misconduct allegations go away with a payment of 4,5 million USD. According to his testimony on Fox, the FBI was involved and his father had a wire to record the negotiation.[11]

Attorney General nomination

His nomination by Trump for the position as United States attorney general in 2024 may have been a trick to lure him away from his Congress position (he gave up his seat for which he was just reelected), to then bring the misconduct allegations into full view again via the commercially-controlled media and make him go out of politics for the time being.
