Maia Sandu is the anti-Russian President of Moldova.[1]

Alleged Russian meddling
In November 2024, Moldova's pro-EU President Maia Sandu claimed a second term in office, despite alleged Russian meddling, and after a tense election run-off seen as a choice between Europe and Russia.[2]
Support from UK
On 22 September 2026, in a speech at the UN General Assembly, Andy Burnham said:
"Today I am tasking our security chiefs to begin work on a new National Centre for Information Defence – to detect, attribute and disrupt these kinds of hostile state information attacks. To support and defend our democracy.
"And I know this is a shared challenge. So we are going to use our experience in the UK – and the fact that we have already been through this shock – to help other countries.
"We have already supported Moldova to protect its elections from Russian interference."[3]
