Domain & WHOIS History Lookup
Look up past owners, registrars and nameservers for any domain. Our records go back to 2007.
Decades of WHOIS & RDAP history
Our archive goes back to 2007, capturing registrant details for many domains that current WHOIS no longer shows. Search a domain to see how much history we hold, then purchase the complete report:
- A deduplicated record-update timeline (registrar, contacts, nameservers, status)
- Every snapshot's full details as clean structured fields — registrar, dates, nameservers, status, and per-role contacts (registrant, admin, tech, billing, abuse)
- Registrar history across the domain's life
- Delivered as a .zip — a readable report.pdf plus a structured snapshots.jsonl — via a secure email link
What a domain's history shows
Each record is a copy of the domain's WHOIS or RDAP data on the day we saw it. Read in order, the records show who registered the domain over the years, which registrars it moved between, when its nameservers changed, and when it expired or was registered again. A nameserver change often comes with a new owner or a new host, so the timeline can show when a domain changed hands even where the owner's name is hidden.
Why old records still show the owner
In 2018, when the EU's GDPR took effect, most registrars stopped publishing the owner's name, email and address in WHOIS. A lookup today usually shows “REDACTED FOR PRIVACY” or the name of a privacy service. Records captured before then often list the registrant in full, along with the admin and tech contacts. For many older domains, those records are where you can still find who owned them.
When people check a domain's history
Before you buy a domain
See how long it has been registered, how often it has changed hands, and whether it expired and was picked up again. A domain that changed owners every year or two may have been used for spam.
Phishing and fraud investigations
See who registered a suspicious domain and when, and whether it was re-registered soon after it expired.
Trademark and UDRP disputes
UDRP panels look at when the current owner acquired a domain. A dated record of ownership and registrar changes helps establish that.
Recovering a domain you lost
If your domain expired or was transferred without your permission, past records show when it left your account and which registrar it went to.
Questions
- Can I see who owned a domain before?
- Often, yes. Records from before 2018 usually list the registrant by name and organization. Newer records are more likely to show a privacy service. Search a domain above to see how many records we hold and which years they cover.
- How far back does WHOIS history go?
- Our archive starts in 2007. The number of records varies by domain, and each domain page shows the count and the years covered before you buy.
- Is checking domain history free?
- Checking is free. Every domain page shows how many records we hold, the years they cover, how many times the record was updated, and how many registrars the domain has had. The full report for one domain costs $29.00, paid once.
- What is in the report?
- A PDF with a timeline of changes followed by the details of every record, and a JSONL file with one structured record per snapshot for spreadsheets or scripts. Both come in a .zip.
- How do I receive the report?
- We email you a download link, usually within a few minutes of payment. The link works for 24 hours.
- What if you have no history for a domain?
- The domain page tells you before you pay. A report can only be bought for a domain we hold records for.
